Who We Are Banner

The Chagos Islanders Movement

We are a group of Chagossian volunteers standing up against the injustice of the British and US governments. We are the survivors and the children of survivors, now based across the UK, united by a history of forced eviction and a future of determined advocacy.

Our Aims

Justice

Seeking accountability for the islanders dumped in the slums of Mauritius and Seychelles in 1968.

Right to Return

Fighting for the fundamental right to return to our motherland.

Healing

Addressing the psychological, emotional, and economic consequences of exile.

Fight Injustice

Combating the ongoing neglect and inequality of the past 50 years.

Preservation

Promoting and safeguarding our unique culture, heritage, and way of life.

Lineage

Sending a clear message: Our lineage will NOT be subject to extinction.

A Struggle Hidden from the World

The world knows little of the struggle our people have been subjected to, ranging from inhumane acts and hideous abuse to degrading treatment in slums. Too many Chagossians are dying in exile, still suffering from the emotional and economic weight of expulsion.

"We have often been referred to as ‘Tarzans’ and ‘Man Fridays’ by employees of the British Government."

The Great Hypocrisy

The "defenders of human rights"—Great Britain and the USA—forced the exile of an entire population to build a military base. Despite being given false hope of returning, the lease for the airbase was renewed in 2016 for another 20 years, a cruel disappointment for our community.

Our strength, passion, and courage will prevail against this continuous ordeal.

We believe in our cause for righteousness and our community will stand against those responsible of stealing our country.
